When you think of Singapore, what comes to mind? Probably the infinity pool at Marina Bay Sands, the futuristic Supertrees, or the luxury shopping malls of Orchard Road. It’s the land of Crazy Rich Asians, right?

Well, yes and no.

While the glittering skyline is impressive, there is a completely different side to the Lion City that most tourists never see. I’m talking about untouched islands with white sand, surreal theme parks that feel like a fever dream, and rustic villages that look like they belong in the 1950s.

If you are tired of fighting crowds at the Merlion and want to see the real city, you need to get off the beaten path. Here are my favorite hidden gems in Singapore that will make you rethink everything you know about this modern metropolis.

If you want “unique,” forget Universal Studios. Haw Par Villa is easily one of the strangest and most fascinating hidden gems in Singapore. Built in 1937 by the brothers who created Tiger Balm, this park is a technicolor journey through Chinese mythology.

But this isn’t Disney. The main attraction here is the infamous “Ten Courts of Hell.” It is a dimly lit tunnel that features graphic dioramas depicting punishments for various sins according to Chinese folklore. It’s gruesome, bizarre, and absolutely unmissable.

Why go: It’s free, it’s Instagrammable (in a creepy way), and you will definitely have stories to tell. Insider Tip: Bring mosquito repellent. The park is built on a hill with plenty of trees, and the mosquitoes here are as vicious as the demons in the dioramas.

2. Lazarus Island: The Secret Beach Paradise

Most people heading for a beach day in Singapore go straight to Sentosa. The result? Crowded sands and expensive beach clubs.

For a true escape, take a ferry from Marina South Pier to St. John’s Island and walk across the causeway to Lazarus Island. There are no shops, no vending machines, and no hotels here. Just a pristine crescent of white sand and turquoise water that looks more like the Maldives than Singapore. It is widely considered one of the best hidden gems in Singapore for those who crave silence and nature.

Why go: It is the cleanest, quietest beach in the country. Insider Tip: Pack everything you need, including water and food. There are literally no facilities on the island, which is exactly why it stays so peaceful.

3. Kampong Lorong Buangkok: The Last Surviving Village

Singapore moved from third-world to first-world in a single generation, replacing wooden huts with high-rise HDB flats. But one single village (or “Kampong”) refused to change.

Kampong Lorong Buangkok is the last surviving traditional village on Singapore’s mainland. Visiting here feels like stepping into a time machine. You’ll see zinc-roofed wooden houses, roaming chickens, and fruit trees, all shadowed by the modern skyscrapers in the distance. It is a living, breathing museum of what life used to be like.

Why go: To see the “old spirit” of the community before it eventually disappears. Insider Tip: Remember that real people live here. Be respectful, keep your voice down, and don’t walk into private yards without permission.

4. Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve: The Wild Side

Singapore is often called a “Garden City,” which implies manicured lawns and pruned hedges. But if you want to see raw, untamed jungle, head to the northwest corner of the island to Sungei Buloh.

This ecological jewel is a stopover point for migratory birds flying from Siberia to Australia. But the real thrill? The crocodiles. Yes, wild saltwater crocodiles roam the waters here. Spotting an Estuarine Crocodile sunbathing on the mudflats is a heart-pounding reminder that nature is still in charge here.

Why go: It’s a photographer’s dream and a total contrast to the concrete jungle of the CBD. Insider Tip: Visit during low tide. That’s when the mudflats are exposed, and the crocodiles and monitor lizards come out to hunt and sunbathe.

5. Japanese Cemetery Park: The “Sakura” Experience

This might sound morbid, but the Japanese Cemetery Park in Hougang is one of the most beautiful and photogenic spots in the country. Founded in 1891, it is the final resting place for the Japanese community in Singapore.

The park is famous for its floral archways lined with pink Bougainvillea. When they are in full bloom, they look strikingly similar to Japanese Cherry Blossoms (Sakura). It is quiet, respectful, and incredibly scenic—a true sanctuary in the suburbs.

Why go: For a peaceful walk and some of the most aesthetic photos you can take in Singapore. Insider Tip: It’s a residential area, so keep the noise to a minimum. It’s perfect for a solo morning walk with a coffee.

Final Thoughts

Singapore is so much more than just a stopover destination or a shopping hub. Whether you are hunting for ghosts at Haw Par Villa or sunbathing on Lazarus Island, these hidden gems in Singapore prove that the best travel experiences are often found where the tour buses don’t go.

So, pack your EZ-Link card, grab a bottle of water, and go get lost. You might just find your new favorite spot.

Top 15 Things to do in Niagara Falls USA

Visit Maid of the Mist- One of the main reasons to visit Niagara Falls is to see its beauty and the best way to do so is to take a poncho and jump on a Maid of the Mist boat. These boats have been carrying travelers to and from the base of the falls since 1840. While going to this place, be prepared to get wet.

The Maid of the Mist dips you under the falls, but rain gear is offered, and many say that it is one of the best ways to experience the grandeur of Niagara Falls. The Maid of the Mist quays on the U.S. side of the falls. The tours leave every 15 minutes. For adults, the tickets cost around $18.25 and for kids between 6 to 12 years, it is around $10.65. Schedules keep on changing depending on the season.

Niagara Falls State Park- This is another popular place in the list of top 15 things to do in Niagara Falls USA. It is the nation’s oldest park. Not only these Falls are spectacular, but they are also embedded in an early state and U.S. history. Enjoy the drama and excitement of the Falls from the Observation Tower near Prospect Point, the only scenic view of all the three Falls. To move down from the tower to board the famous Maid of the Mist, you need to take the elevator.

Experience the WidPlay MistRider Zipline- This is one of the fascinating things to do in Niagara Falls, USA. How about enjoying the beauty of Niagara Falls from a crazy perspective? Beginning from the Canadian side, the zipline to Niagara Falls drives you beyond the thundering falls- you will feel like a bird flying in the sky.

You can enjoy the view from either the outdoor or indoor observation deck and if you do not mind spending some money- you can enjoy the scenic beauty of the landscape from the revolving restaurant in the tower. To reach the top, you will board a glass-enclosed elevator that takes only 52 seconds to reach the top of the tower. Several tourists recommend visiting this place at night to catch a bird’s eye view when the falls are lighted.

List of Top 8 Things to do in the Philippines.

Chill in Boracay Island- This island is 4 square miles of land rimmed by tropical palm trees and white coral beaches. Being one of the best islands in the Philippines, it has been one of the top places to visit in the Philippines, but because of current developments on the island, its ranking has come to tenth place.

Visiting this island should be one of your list of things to do in the Philippines. Boracay Island is a perfect place that has earlier attracted over one-third of the visitors visiting the Philippines to its shores. Too small to handle the enormous influx of tourists, the beautiful island started facing serious environmental damage and was shut down by the government for almost 6 months.

Visiting Boracay Island has been one of the top 8 things to do in the Philippines because of its unique beaches. The closure of tourism to the island was, in most of the parts, to avoid any more damage to them from the wild crazy beach parties which were being conducted.

Which is the best on Boracay Island? It is White Beach, which has 2 and a half miles of spectacular white sand that curves around the edges of a bay backed by groves of palms and bordered by the sparkling waters. White Beach is amazing, but it is not just one which is worth visiting. You should miss visiting Ilig-Iligan Beach, Diniwid Beach, and Puka Shell Beach. All of them are equally beautiful.

Enjoy the beauty of the Banaue Rice Terraces- A list of interesting things to do in the Philippines is incomplete without mentioning a drive to the beautiful Banaue Rice Terrace. Many people consider the Banaue Rice Terraces one of the popular tourist spots in the Philippines and visiting this beautiful place is one of the most interesting things to do in the Philippines. This place is called the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” The terraces are 2,000 years old and they are sculpted into the mountains of Ifugao using different tools. The terraces are still used these days by the locals who plant their rice and veggies there, as they are naturally moistened by the surrounding rainforests.

See the Active Mayon Volcano- Mayon Volcano, also known as Mount Mayon is present on the island of Luzon. This volcano has picked up the nickname, “Perfect Cone” because of its symmetrical cone shape. There are numerous eruptions at the volcano which led to huge excavations of the nearby towns as the mud and ash rain down on the people. In 1814, there was a severe eruption in which over 1200 people lose their lives. The volcano and the surrounding areas are an important part of the national park which is worth visiting while you are in the Philippines.

Spend some time at the Historical Fort Santiago- Fort Santiago in Manila is a fort that was built by the Spanish as a defense medium within the city’s walls. This fort is popular with travelers and has an interesting story to narrate. Jose Rizal was a Philippines national hero who was detained within the fort up until its execution in 1896. Although you are exploring the fort, you can have a look at the bronze footprints that have been inserted into the ground to mark the final steps of the prisoners before execution.

Visit the Puerto Princesa Underground River in Palawan- If there is a must-see place in the Philippines, then it is the Puerto Princesa Underground River in the district of Palawan. This five-mile-long river is both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the new 7 wonders of nature.

This river winds its way through an extraordinary limestone karst cave system and was thought to be the longest of its type in the world until the current discovery of a much larger one near Playa del Carmen in Mexico.

Discovering the Puerto Princesa Underground River on a piloted tour is a good idea. The experienced guides navigate you through the National park and into the cave system of the river on small boats reciting interesting facts you would otherwise miss on.

While it is enticing to take a dip in the sparkling blue-green waters, swimming in the river is not allowed, so do not jump inside. Puerto Princesa is one of the popular tourist spots in the Philippines, so you will find this place crowded most of the time.

Go to See the Head of All Churches- The Santo Nino Basilica is also known as the Minor Basilica of the Holy Child; this church is one of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in the country and was constructed in 1965. The Spanish found an image of the Santo Nino de Cebu, a statue of the Baby Jesus, and so on a similar spot, they constructed this church. Inside the Basilica Complex, there is a museum that narrates the history of Christianity in Cebu and is worth a visit once you have finished looking at the Basilica.

Enjoy the Unusual Chocolate Hills- Visiting the Unusual Chocolate Hills is one of the top 8 things to do in the Philippines. The Chocolate Hills are in the Bohol Province of the Philippines and they are quite rare and a fascinating sight to watch. There are around 1,260 hills spread out over an area that covers nearly 20 square miles.

The small hills are covered in grass and as the dry season comes in the grass starts turning from green to brown and starts looking like chocolate. This hill varies from 30 to 50 meters high and is considered an iconic landmark of the nation. It is believed that no trip is complete without a trip to this hill.

Go for a trip to Volcano Island- Taal volcano is situated on the island of Luzon and is an active volcano that has erupted around 33 times earlier. Because of the location of the volcano, previous eruptions have led to huge losses of life. Now, it is not possible to live on Volcano Island as the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has proclaimed the whole island as a Permanent Danger zone. A trip to this volcano is worth it mainly because the Crater Lake on the island is one of the largest lakes in the world.

The Philippines is an incredible country made up of more than 7,000 islands. With its fast-growing population and diverse natural landscapes, it offers a variety of experiences for every traveler. Did you know there are nearly 20 volcanoes scattered throughout the islands, and the country is prone to harsh weather and typhoons? Despite these challenges, the Philippines is a stunning destination full of natural wonders waiting to be explored. If you are planning a trip, this guide highlights 8 Unforgettable Things to do when you are in the Philippines.

While tourism in the Philippines hasn’t yet reached the levels of neighboring countries like Vietnam and Thailand, it’s steadily growing. Many areas remain less commercially developed, making now the perfect time to visit before they become more crowded.

When visiting, don’t expect to find Buddhist temples as in other Southeast Asian countries. One of the best things about the Philippines is that English is widely spoken, making it easy for travelers to navigate. From breathtaking panoramic views and terraced rice fields to pristine beaches, there’s so much to see.

List of Best Things to do in NYC

Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge- This is one of the must-do things in NYC. A famous NYC landmark and the most celebrated bridge of the city, traversing the neo-Gothic span of the Brooklyn Bridge on foot has marked a New York rite of passage since its first debuted in the year 1883. Architecturally beautiful, with twin arched towers and a web of suspension cables, the bridge not just proposes a practical means of connecting pedestrian traffic between Brooklyn and Downtown Manhattan, but it also offers exciting panoramas over both the New York Harbor and the East River.

The High Line- This is the perfect example of what New York City does best: smartly rehabs old spaces into just like what you want them to be. When a 1.45-mile-long abandoned freight rail on Manhattan’s West End was changed into a high, mixed-use public park in 2009, people of New York came running. Towering 30 feet above the bustling 11th Avenue, the 0 High Line is a great feat of landscape architecture that melds benches, walkways, and chaise lounges with perennials, grass, bushes, and trees in ideal shabby-kempt harmony.

Visit the MoMA- Manhattan’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is a mecca for modern art lovers, boasting one of the most impressive and vast collections of contemporary art of the world, spanning paintings, installations, sculptures, and much more. Works from big names like Van Gogh, Picasso, Warhol, and a busy schedule of special exhibitions, educations programs, movies, and cultural events make sure the museum is always a buzz with something new for the art enthusiasts.

Enjoy the Sky-High Views of Manhattan- ChatGPT said:

The Manhattan skyline is one of the most iconic in the world, and seeing it from above is truly unforgettable. When you Discover the Best Things to do in NYC, make sure to visit its three stunning observatories. Each offers breathtaking views of Manhattan, the surrounding rivers, and beyond—making them must-visit attractions for every traveler.

Sail into New York Harbor- Another must-do when you Discover the Best Things to do in NYC is sailing into New York Harbor. Amid Manhattan’s concrete jungle, it’s easy to forget the city is an island surrounded by the Hudson and East Rivers. A boat ride offers stunning views of its skyline, unique geography, and a perfect chance to wave at Lady Liberty. Choose from classic sightseeing cruises or local-favorite NYC boat tours for a memorable experience.

Float your boat- If you’re looking for fun ways to Discover the Best Things to do in NYC, sailing in New York Harbor tops the list. Hop on a sail-powered schooner with the Classic Harbor Line at Chelsea Piers, then enjoy fresh oysters aboard Tribeca’s Grand Banks, a docked schooner. For a more casual experience, try a free mini cruise with the North River Lobster Company at Pier 81. Another exciting option is spending a day on the Honorable William Wall, the Manhattan Yacht Club’s floating clubhouse in the Hudson River—bring your food, sip some drinks, and watch sailboats glide by for a perfect harbor adventure.

Listen to Opera Under the Stars- Pull up a chair in Lincoln Center Plaza for the Metropolitan Opera’s free Summer HD festival for programs of opera productions every night from 23rd August 2019, through Labor Day. The plaza comes equipped with over 3,000 seats, but you must reach the venue early to secure your seat. Summer HD Festival screenings will run as scheduled. In case of rain, thunder, or lightning, the program will be canceled. Most of the screenings start at 8 p.m.

A visit to Times Square at Night- As one of the most popular places in the world, Times Square, where the New Year’s Eve ball drops, is a must-visit. It looks beautiful, especially during the night. You will be hit by the neon signs, glowing billboards, and gridlock traffic 24 hours every day. You will not see much of a difference at 11 a.m. compared to 11 p.m. While there are a lot of stores for restaurants and shopping, simply walking around a few block ranges will be interesting.

Visit the Coney Island, Boardwalk- The famous Coney Island Boardwalk is best visited in the summer, spring, or early fall when you can sit along the beach with a margarita or beer in hand. At any time of the year, you can ride the famous rollercoaster and thrill rides at Luna Park, have a hot dog at the renowned Nathan’s, or visit the Coney Island Aquarium. In June, Coney Island holds its special Mermaid Parade- a must-visit festival if you are in the city during the summer.

Visit 9/11 Memorial and Museum- Visiting Ground Zero is, in our opinion, a must when you visit New York City. The museum is extremely well-constructed and powerful. It gets busy, so it is recommended to visit as early as possible so that you can avoid the crowd. Oh, while going there, make sure you stop inside the Oculus, the train station which is adjacent to Ground Zero. It looks like a dove taking flight.

Dover Street Market New York- ChatGPT said:

The Philippines is a tropical paradise in the Pacific Ocean made of over 7000 islands that provide a natural playground for your deep traveler. Collectively, its landscapes feature a wide variety of natural wonders, ranging from rice terraces and volcanoes to limestone caves and underwater rivers along with attractive beaches.

Individually, the islands offer something unique, whether you are looking for a perfect place to dive and snorkel or prefer to see the historical sights in cities like Vigan or Manila, which have profound colonial roots. As the country is so spread out, a visit to the Philippines needs careful planning so that you can connect with proper guides and find the most suitable lodging as a base for your favorite pursuits.
Best Places to Visit in the Philippines

Manila- The capital of the Philippines, it is the heart and soul of the country. Shiny skyscrapers rise across the Asian metropolis amid the concrete buzzing of the city. With malls, hotels, and modern parks with the best hospitality service, Manila is one of the best places to visit in the Philippines.

Kawasan Falls, Cebu- If you like swimming in cool waters, Kawasan Falls in Cebu city must be on your list. It is a multi-layered waterfall in the town of Badian. It is well-known for its turquoise waters. The initial cascade, with a height of 40 meters, is where most of the travelers stay, swim, and also enjoy a natural water massage on a bamboo raft. A trek of 10-minute can take you up to the calmer second cascade.

Also, it is the endpoint of the popular adventure activity, i.e. the canyoneering adventure.
Beautiful Places to Visit in Laos

1. Vientiane

Vientiane is known as the charming capital of Laos and even though this is technically called a capital city, it still feels like a small town rather than anything else. Vientiane used to a former French trading post during the colonial era, and as a result, it has a delightful old French quarter than you can discover. As you walk around, you will see a plethora of French-inspired architecture like the Laotian version of the popular Arc de Triomphe in Paris known as Patuxai.

There are other attractions that are worth a visit like sprawling local markets and temples like Wat Si Saket which is the oldest of its type in Vientiane.

2. Tham Kong Lo

Tham Kong Lo is a beautiful underground karst limestone cave tucked away inside Phou Hin Bun National Park in Central Laos. Popularly known as Konglor Cave, which means “beauty in the dark”, this cave is accessible only using a longtail boat. You can see the longest river cave system in the world with your way lit up by a magical miner’s lamp.

The boats will stop at a few points, where you will be able to explore the cave completely barefoot. Recently added colorful lights create a charming and theatrical light show to what was earlier a pitch-dark caving adventure.

Tham Kong Lo is not a destination in the country that can be easily reached: it takes eight hours in a bus on a pothole-ridden road. Yet travelers still travel from different parts of the world to see its secret caverns, strange stalactites, and ethereal limestone formations.

3. Wat Phu

This place is a must in the bucket list of every traveler. Wat Phu Champasak, popularly known as Vat Phou Champasak, is an old Khmer Hindu temple complex. It spreads across six terraces and three levels. Situated at the base of Mount Phou Khao, Wat Phu- which means “Mountain Temple” has buildings that are more than a thousand years old.

Over the years, many more structures have been constructed. It is these more modern ruins from the 11th to 13th centuries that can be witnessed at Wat Phu Champasak presently. The highlight of the city is Wat Phou itself, an old shrine that is dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the Hindu gods. It boasts elaborate carvings, a sacred spring, and a set of Buddhist icons. The sanctuary was turned into a Buddhist monastery during the 13th century- which is till today functional.

If you would like to stay longer and explore the surrounding landscape in Champasak, you can stay in the nearby villages with French colonial palaces and Buddhist temples. When you are there don’t miss the evening shadow puppet show in the theater.

4. Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng is located between Vientiane and Luang Prabang and is one of the best backpacker locations in Laos. Earlier, this part of Laos has a wild reputation and a remarkably vibrant nightlife scene, although now it has become a little dull. All thanks to the action the local government took to clean its image.

One of the main reasons to visit Van Vieng is to enjoy the tubing down the Nam Song River and you can enjoy the lush green jungle at the same time. There are many other spots like the Tham Phu Kham Cave which is popular for the statue of Buddha made of Bronze and its lagoon.

5. Bokeo Nature Reserve

The Bokeo Nature Reserve lies away from the hustle-bustle of the town of Huay Xai and is a famous nature reserve that is popular for its conservation work to safeguard black-cheeked gibbons which were rediscovered in 1997 after it was thought that they were extinct.

This park lets you stay in tree houses which give you a bird’s eye view of the forest canopy and you can partake in fun jingle activities like swinging on a zip line. You can also see bears, elephants, buffalo, and tigers in the park. If you are a keen bird watcher, then you can check out different species of colorful avians.

6. Tham Kong Lo

Tham Kong Lo is one of the beautiful places to visit in Laos. Its other name is Kong Lo Cave which is a part of the wider Phu Hin Bun National Park. Both the park and cave is situated along the Phu Hin Bun River. The central chamber is known as one of the most stunning in all of Southeast Asia.

The cave is about 6.5 kilometers long and is about 300 feet high. It is known for its beautiful jade-hued pools which are said to be of the same color as the skin of the Hindu god, Indra.

One of the best ways to check out the cave is to enjoy a boat trip along with the beautiful chamber and appreciate the rock crystals and pillars here.

7. Phonsavan

This is the capital city of the Xieng Khouang Province in Central Laos, and the gateway to the Plain of Jars. Constructed in 1970 to replicate the old town that was destroyed during the Second Indo-China War, this town is characterized by brightly colored wooden houses and cattle fields managed by Hmong cowboys.

Bordered by undulating hills and pine forests, the scenic town of Phonsavan has a great climate all through the year. The main attraction is the megalithic archaeological landscape in Laos that is constructed of thousands of stones, jar-like structures dotted about the valleys. Believed to have been utilized as graves or to store rice wine, the remains of these stone jars are one of the most renowned prehistoric sites in Southeast Asia.

But there is more to Phonsavan than the Plain of Jars, mainly if you love traveling outdoors. The suburbs of this town also provide some immense scenery to be found on a trekking adventure- from cascading waterfalls to secluded pools to secret caves.

8. Wat Xieng Thong, Luang Prabang

Wat Xieng Thong is also one of the beautiful places to visit in Laos. Basically, it is a Buddhist temple situated at the northern tip of Luang Phrabang, Laos’s peninsula. This is among those most significant Lao monasteries and stands out as a significant monument. There are over twenty structures including the shrines, a sin, the residences, and the pavilions, along with gardens of shrubs, flowers, and several other trees. There is a “tree of life” set on the exterior wall at the west. Inside, a gold stencil work shows the dharma wheels on the ceiling and adventures from King Chanthaphanit’s life.

Cycling tours are the easiest way of sightseeing and one of the best things to do in Cambodia for the backpackers. Riding through quiet trails of countryside amid attractive natural scenery lets the travelers escape the crowd. Typically, these tours include sightseeing of Elephant Terrace, Ta Prohm, and other famous Angkor temples.

Apsara Dance

For those who love art, theatrics, and dance, the Apsara Show, or the traditional Khmer performance is one of the greatest things to do in Cambodia. This cultural dance form belongs to the mythological courts of Gods and Kings, from where it has developed into a modern and unique form that we see currently. The Khmer dance revolves around a storyline that is narrated through the beautiful and flexible movements of the performers and their colorful and attractive outfits, which is why it is regarded as one of the top things to do in Cambodia.

Cruising

Cruising the Mekong is one of the most exciting and best things to do in Cambodia. Sailing from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap on a traditional Cambodian boat is one of the most exciting and fun things to do in Cambodia. Other than the relaxing journey, the attractive views of the sunset that one can see from onboard the cruise looks like a cherry on the cake. During the journey, one can also view the Irrawaddy river dolphins in the water, i.e. the rarest of all aquatic mammals. Observing these friendly and peaceful creatures in their natural place is undoubtedly one of the refreshing things to do in Phnom Penh.

Try Cambodian cuisine

One of the main attractions of Cambodia that attract people to visit this place is its food. A typical Cambodian meal includes a fish item and rice. Often known as the “cuisine of contrasts”, Cambodian food has a lot of variations. When in Cambodia, one must try Fish Amok, Nom Banh Chok, Samlor Machu Trey, Num Anksom Sach Chrouk. Also, with its wide varieties of seafood, Cambodia is one of the great places for seafood lovers.

Watching sunrise or sunset at Angkor Wat

Watching the sunrise in Angkor Wat is a must-do while you are in Siem Cambodia. There is something magical about seeing this city come to life as you watch the sunrise slowly above it. It is better to reach the location early in the morning. You can even pre-arrange a tuk-tuk to come and pick you the previous day.

Experts suggest leaving your guesthouse by 4:45 am so that you get sufficient time to make it to the morning entrance time and find your spot. However, do not be too much engrossed in taking the perfect shot that you forget to enjoy the lovely moment and experience. Naturally, here sunsets are spectacular and worth watching.

Explore the outstanding architecture of Phnom Penh Palace

The star attraction of Phnom Penh built-in 1860 is not simply a shiny palace dominating the city’s skyline, but also a significant reminder of the blood-stained history of Cambodia. The stylish structure is characterized by its crown of towers and stupas, the Silver Pagoda sitting adjacent to it, well-maintained tropical gardens, and the tranquility that exists inside the high-rise walls. With all these and more, the Royal Palace is certainly one of the best Cambodia tourist attractions and one of the best things to do in Cambodia.

Engage with the wild animals in the National Parks

Do not want to visit temples? No problem. Apart from large numbers of temples, attractions also include many national parks in Cambodia and wildlife sanctuaries housing some of the rarest species of the world’s best flora and fauna. Paying a visit to these is one of the funniest things to do in Cambodia for nature lovers and adventure seekers. While Virachey National Park is home to sun bears, elephants, clouded leopards, and different birds, the Ream Park is popular for internationally endangered species of prey, like the grey-headed fish eagle, white-bellied sea eagle, and the Brahminy Kite.

Tonlé Sap Lake

The Tonle Sap Lake in Siem Reap is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia. During the monsoon, between the month of June and October, this lake creates a massive natural environment, including wetlands and flooded forests.

Swimming with the elephants

It is the craziest thing to do in Cambodia. The Elephant Valley Project at Mondulkiri is a group of passionate, dedicated people whose work is wholly directed towards care and conservation of injured, abandoned, and orphaned elephants. Also known as a place where “elephants get to be elephants again”, EVP feeds, safeguards, and offers shelter to the elephants. Tourists can come here with prior booking and spend some time with this adorable animal. Travelers can play and swim with these elephants which is always much better than riding on them and troubling them.

Discover the secrets of Tuol Sleng

The War Museum in Tuol Sleng, though not a cheerful place, is a significant place to visit in Cambodia for its horrific history. Back in the Khmer Rouge era, the school-cum-execution ground was used to torture the inmates. This S-21 Detention Centre today acts as a haunting memento of the genocide of the era. Visiting the museum might not be one of the best things to do in Cambodia, but one must surely pay their respects to the brave people who lost their lives here. Here, you can find some remarkable sights of human activities around the lake, in the form of various floating villages.

Participate in Cambodian Village Cooking Class

There are several free things to do in Cambodia like tuk-tuk ride, cycling, and sailing too. However, some paid experiences would also enrich your experience on a holiday to this lovely destination. Try culinary experiences like learning how to cook authentic Cambodian cuisines. This experience can be learned with the help of a local chef, either in the village or city. If you want an authentic cultural experience, go with the former option. Visit the rural regions and learn cooking from the local chefs.

Dharmikarama Burmese Temple- This Buddhist Temple located outside Myanmar is one of the popular places to visit in Penang. Situated in Georgetown, Penang, it stands just opposite Wat Chayamangkalaram Temple, with one pair of huge stone elephants near the front gate. Inside the Pagoda grounds, you will see a Boddhi tree, a pond where you can wish anything, and many apartments for monks. Devotees have provided several statues of Buddha, so you can find his serene-faced image at nearly every corner in different meditation poses.

The walkways have a series of panels with attractive murals showing the journey of Prince Siddhartha attaining Nirvana and becoming Buddha. The temple is busy during festivals like Wesak Day in April- a celebration just like Thailand’s Song Kran Festival, in which the devotees sprinkle water on each other and pay respect to their elders. In Malaysia, while worshipping you must remove shoes before entering the Dharmikarama Burmese Temple. One of the cheapest ways to reach Dharmikarama Burmese Temple from Komtar or Lebuh Chulia is to take bus #202, Hin Bus #93, or Minibus 26, 31 and 88.

Stay at a heritage museum or building- When you visit a place as steeped in history and heritage as Penang, it is better to assume that not all buildings were constructed in the past 20 or 30 years. This includes some hotels and restaurants. Popularly known as refurbished heritage sites, visitors can spend the night in these buildings much like any other hostel or hotel. Some places, like the Blue Mansion, even has a museum within the area. Other possible choices include the Seven Terraces, a Perankan themed boutique hotel. These places carry a profound link to Penang’s history and have a different ambiance altogether when compared to the Hard Rocks and the Bay Views.

If you planning to spend the weekend in Penang, an interstate road trip to Penang is one of the possible ways to explore the several interesting facets of the Malaysian Peninsula. Just rent a car, and head to these places:

Bandar Baharu- It is a town in Southern Kedah, situated along the Penang-Perak-Kedah border. This is a humble town consisting of seven sub-districts. Serdang is an administrative town of Bandar Baharu district, located about 20-kilo meters away. The Aeri Tasik Park was initially an inactive mine. Since then, it has been developed to become a recreation garden, a favorite for both adults and kids of the facilities. Plans have been made to improve the current condition of the park, which includes concrete bridges to link two lakes, a rest house for drivers, a floating restaurant, and a pedestrian pathway.

Mount Jerai- Earlier known as “Kedah’s Peak”, Mount Jerai is a huge limestone mountain that rises nearly 1200m over sea level. Considered as the highest peak in the state, it adds a unique touch of variety to the scenic flat plains throughout the area. It is exhausting for most of the cars to make it all the way to the top. So, once you arrive at the base of the imposing mountain, park your vehicle there and take a van. The chilled breeze is a definite arrival indicator.
